Common questions and fixes for MenuWright.
General
What is menu engineering?
Menu engineering is the practice of analyzing menu items by profitability and popularity to make data-driven decisions about pricing, promotion, and removal. MenuWright automates this using the Kasavana & Smith model. See Menu matrix.
Does MenuWright work with my POS?
Square is fully supported with OAuth integration. Toast and Clover adapters are on the roadmap. Any POS can be used via CSV/Excel import. See POS integration.
Is my data secure?
Yes. All data is encrypted in transit (TLS) and at rest. POS tokens are encrypted and stored separately from sales data. MenuWright is multi-tenant — each restaurant's data is scoped and isolated. See our privacy policy.
Data
My Square sync is not working
- Verify the OAuth connection is active (Settings → POS Integration)
- Check that your Square account has itemized sales (not just totals)
- Re-authorize if the connection shows "Expired"
- Sync runs daily; manual sync is available at Settings → Sync → Run Now
My food costs are wrong
Food costs are entered manually (Menu → Edit Costs) unless your POS includes them. Double-check:
- Per-unit cost matches your current supplier pricing
- Costs include all ingredients, not just the protein
- Modifier costs (extra cheese, substitutions) are accounted for
Can I import historical data?
Yes. Upload historical CSV files with a date column. MenuWright backfills
the time series and recalculates trends.
Recommendations
The AI suggested cutting my best-selling item
The AI classifies by both profitability AND popularity. A high-volume item with very low margin is a "Crowd Pleaser" — the recommendation is usually to reprice or reduce cost, not cut. If the recommendation says "Cut," the item is likely a "Leftover" (low margin AND low volume). Check the item's quadrant on the matrix.
Can I override a recommendation?
Yes. Toggle the recommendation status to Dismissed on the item card. Dismissed recommendations do not reappear unless the underlying data changes significantly.
